Child Abuse Identification – Mandated Reporter Training
Welcome to the Child Abuse Identification (CAI) – Mandated Reporter Certification Course. This course addresses the requirements for the Identification and Reporting of Child Abuse and Maltreatment, as mandated by Chapter 56 of the Laws of 2021 amended Social Services Law § 413. Specific professionals, including certain school staff in New York State are identified as Mandated Reporters and are required to complete this course.
Effective September 1, 2025, the CAI course will include the addition of guidance on identifying an abused or maltreated child when such child is an individual with an intellectual or developmental disability, as required by the most recent amendment of Section 413 of the Social Services Law. The law requires every person who is required to take the mandated training related to child abuse, including those who have previously undergone the training, to take the new updated training by November 17, 2026. Course content includes adverse childhood experiences and trauma, implicit bias, the physical and behavioral indicators of child abuse, including in a virtual environment and when such child is an individual with an intellectual or developmental disability; when and how to make a report; what actions a reporter is mandated or authorized to take; the legal actions afforded to a reporter; and the consequences for failing to report. This course is asynchronous.. The required length of this course is 2 hours; however due to required additional content, this course will take more than 2 hours.
Participants have 30 days to complete the course.
